North To Alaska -- 2005

On January 22, 2005 Goldwing Rider’s from Alaska gathered for our first ever District meeting. Our District Director Dennis Bible organized and brought together District Officers and Riders from every Chapter to organize our summer of Rides and Events.

As we were planning our State Ride’s, Rally’s and Events Calendar the Ultimate Ride came to me. Just eight days after Wing Ding XXVII, the Fairbanks Alaska Chapter AK-B is having their annual “Function at the Junction” in Tok, Alaska, on July 15, 16 and 17, 2005. Five days after that there is the Soldotna Alaska Chapter AK-P Midnight Sun Rally in Soldotna, Alaska, on July 22, 23 and 24, 2005. Only five days after that GWRRA Region “J” is having their first ever Region Rally in Chemainus, British Colombia, Canada, on Vancouver Island July 29 through August 1, 2005. The only news that is better is July is the best month for weather in Canada and Alaska.

What a ride that will be to leave Wing Ding (or anywhere in the US or Canada) with your group and ride up to Alaska. There are many ways to get to Dawson Creek, BC but only one road to Alaska from there, the ALCAN Highway. Outside of Whitehorse you can make a side trip up to Dawson City, the Top of the World Highway and into Tok, Alaska, and be able to see the town of Chicken, Alaska, also. Once you finish your weekend at the “Function at the Junction” at Tok, Alaska, you have a choice of riding up towards Fairbanks and around the top part of the State to see the many “Gold Rush” sites, Mount McKinley and south to the Kenai Peninsula or you can choose to head directly down to the Kenai Peninsula for Soldotna’s Progress Days and Chapter AK-P’s 3rd Annual Midnight Sun Rally. Salmon and halibut fishing is at it’s peak on the Kenai Peninsula in July. After a weekend of the Midnight Sun Rally you can join many of the Alaska Folks for a ride down to Vancouver Island for the Region J British Columbia “Wings in the Murals” Rally at Chemainus.

Of course there are a few words of caution… you will find the folks in Canada and Alaska to be the friendliest and nicest people you have ever met. That could cause you to never want to return home. As you travel you’ve got to watch out for moose, caribou, mountain goats, bears (brown & black), foxes, wolves and several other animals along the way, in or beside the road. There are five steel grated bridges between Dawson Creek BC, and Alaska, where you will need to slow down before crossing.

I have traveled the ALCAN Highway four times on my Goldwing pulling my camper trailer and I have never been disappointed by the ride, it has been the “Ride of a Lifetime” every time. Compared to the eight times in cars, trucks and motor homes a Goldwing is the only way to travel the Highway.

Make your plans now to make the trip, you’ll be glad you did. For the best and most up to date information you will want to buy “The Milepost” or visit www.themilepost.com. There are many folks in Alaska who will be happy to be your Tour Guide while in Alaska. Dennis and Sue Bible will be glad to be tour guides for the folks going south to the Kenai Peninsula. My wife Virginia and I will be glad to be tour guides for the folks wanting to go North to Fairbanks and then South to the Kenai Peninsula.
